Eimear and John
A massive thank you to Eimear and John for taking the time to write about the planning and details of their wedding day which hopefully will be helpful to other couples in making decisions, giving suggestions on venues/suppliers etc, ideas and to discuss how covid-19 impacted their wedding.
Where did you meet?
We first met at Duck Pond nursery 27 years ago and were the best of friends there!
What did you do for your first date?
We baked a cake!
How long have you been together?
We have been together for 7 years.
How and where did he/she propose?
John took Eimear to Sumas for breakfast to celebrate their 6 year anniversary and afterwards went for a walk on the castle green where he got down on one knee and proposed.
How long were you engaged before you got married?
One year and one month.
What made you decide to go with the venue you chose for your wedding day?
It at John’s family home so very sentimental.
Where did you go on your hen /stag do’s?
The stag do is yet to happen due to coronavirus travel restrictions. The hen do was in Jersey and the girls had planned a whole weekend of fun here on the island.
Where did you both get ready the night before your wedding?
Eimear got ready at her parents house the morning of the wedding and John was at our house with his groomsmen.
Where did you stay the night of your wedding?
We stayed in the l’horizon hotel in their superior suite which was amazing and the staff were incredible and couldn’t do enough for us.
Did you have a small or large wedding?
We had planned to have a wedding in the region of 120 guests however due to the coronavirus restrictions we had to limit this to 40 guests.
Do you have a favourite photo from your wedding day? If so, why is it your fave and which one?
We love them all, there are just so many to choose from it’s impossible to pick a favourite. Ollie and Becky from Studio M did a fantastic job.
What was your first dance song and is there a story behind why you chose this song?
Our first dance song was “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran. When we were travelling through New Zealand that song was always playing on the radio so brings back lots of happy memories and we are big fans of Ed!
What made your wedding day unique?
The reduced guest list due to coronavirus made the wedding feel very intimate and unique and meant that we could spend quality time with each guest. It was also probably one of the few marquee weddings to go ahead in 2020!
What your favourite part of your wedding day?
The whole day was amazing for us. From the getting ready in the morning, to seeing each other and saying our vows at the church, to greeting all of our guests and seeing them all so happy for us as well as the incredible food by Jersey Kitchen, and the first dance…we just just loved every minute!
Where did you get your inspiration and styling for your wedding?
Pinterest and Polly! We decided on a winter wedding and the styling was very much greenery, pine cones, candles, romantic lighting etc…it felt so magical.
Where did you go/are going on your honeymoon?
We were lucky enough to do a couple of the staycation deals at local hotels the week after the wedding as we weren’t able to travel. Our plan is to go on honeymoon to celebrate our year anniversary, if coronavirus lets us! We haven’t fully decided where yet, but diving in French Polynesia or exploring Alaska are on our list!
Did you have anything homemade at your wedding?
We designed and made all our stationary for the wedding as well as our table names, seating plan sign and various other decor in the marquee. We also made the pew ends for the church with the help of Eimear’s mum and sisters and Eimear’s mum made the wedding cake which was delicious!
What was your something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue?
Something old and borrowed were Eimear’s mums earrings, the something new was the wedding dress and something blue were her shoes!
Is there anything you would change about your wedding day?
The day was absolutely perfect and even more special than we had imagined. However a lot of guests were unable to travel due to the restrictions so we did miss a lot of faces from oversees and from Jersey that we would have loved to have been there with us.
What advice would you give to brides & grooms planning their wedding?
What really helped us to keep calm was knowing that despite everything being thrown at us in the lead up to it, the most important thing was to be married so keep reminding yourself that’s what it’s all about!
Overall, how did COVID effect your day for better or worse?
For us, we found the build up very stressful as in the weeks leading up to the wedding the advice and guidance was always changing so we were adapting our plans constantly! This made our day feel extra special as we were able to go ahead when at times it was looking unlikely. We felt very grateful and lucky to have the day we had and the intimacy enabled us to spend time with every guest which we can imagine is difficult at a big wedding. One of the best things we did was to get in touch with JP Le Blond from tietheknot.live who live-streamed our wedding ceremony for all our guests that we weren’t able to have with us in person. This made such a difference as we knew that they were joining in the celebrations and we’ve had lots of photos sent to us of guests dressed up at home watching the ceremony with drinks in hand!
